Cofounded in 1979 by Faye Allen and Del Hamilton, both central figures at other Atlanta theaters, 7 Stages sought to produce innovative work. Eventually the company gained an international reputation for groundbreaking collaborations with new artists. The theater's production history shows that it remained financially solvent by balancing socially conscious and experimental work with more traditional and commercially successful productions.
